The timing couldn’t have been better for Oakland catcher Kurt Suzuki. The Athletics have Thursday off, and the backstop’s wife is due to give birth to their first child – a daughter who was expected Wednesday. So, Suzuki is taking advantage of being placed on the paternity list, a relatively new benefit for major league players.

Josh Donaldson, who came over to the A’s from the Chicago Cubs three years ago in the Rich Harden deal, is up for a brief visit to fill in for Suzuki. Donaldson is hitting .158 at Triple-A Sacramento and will return to the River Cats as soon as Suzuki returns to the A’s.

Landon Powell started Wednesday’s game behind the plate against the Los Angeles Angels. Suzuki is expected to return for Friday’s game against Texas.

Elsewhere, outfielder Coco Crisp is day-to-day after experiencing tightness in his left quadriceps after trying to break up a double play Tuesday night. And outfielder Josh Willingham has missed two games with tightness on the left side of his back. The A’s hope Willingham can return to the lineup by Friday.
