The Yankees converted five walks into runs to defeat the A’s 7-3 in the first of three at the Oakland Coliseum. Javier Vazquez (1-2, 8.27), who returned to the Yanks this season earned his first win of the season in a 5 1/3rd inning outing, allowing three runs on six hits, walking three.
For about 15 minutes, Gio González (1-1, 5.40) looked like he was going to be your next big Fantasy Baseball move. But then González ran into early trouble. After quick two outs, Mark Teixeira doubled, González walked the next two batters before Jorge Posada hit a hot smash that Daric Barton mishandled at first base which allowed the first of three first inning runs to score. González lasted 4 1/3rd inning, gave up five runs on only three hits and five big walks.
Craig Breslow relieved González in the fifth and was immediately greeted by an Alex Rodriguez three-run home run, his second on the season.
Travis Buck homered in the bottom of the fifth and Kurt Suzuki launched a two-run bomb in the sixth to fight back to 6-3 going into the seventh.
Jorge Posada drove in his second run of the night in the seventh, grounding into a fielder’s choice, scoring Nick Johnson.
Oakland’s last best chance came in the bottom of the seventh, when they loaded the bases with two outs. Enter Joba Chamberlain, who struck-out Kevin Kouzmanoff to end the threat.l
González had a stellar outing against the Yankees last season and had pitched well enough this season (1-0, 3.38 coming into play) to put a strangle-hold on the A’s fifth starter role. Earlier in the afternoon, Trevor Cahill was activated from the disabled list, but was sent to AAA Sacramento to build up his arm strength. Cahill began the season on the DL with a left scapula stress reaction and had completed a rehab start for the River Cats yesterday. Cahill garnered his share of attention last season going 10-13, in 32 starts and a 4.63 ERA.
The game was delayed 13 minutes when Home Plate Umpire Ed Rapuano left the game after being hit by a batted ball in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Oakland will host two more games against the defending World Series Champions. The A’s Ben Sheets (1-0, 2.65) takes on New York’s Phil Hughes (1-0) tomorrow night at 7:05. Dallas Braden (2-0, 7.20) will look to shut down the Bronx Bombers and CC Sabathia (2-0, 2.84) on Thursday afternoon, first pitch: 12:35.
