Tigers come to town to face A’s

Tonight, the Oakland Athletics open a four game series against a long time rival, the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are a charter member of the American league. The American League began play in 1901. The Tigers were founded in 1894 as part of the Western League.
In 1912, the Tigers started playing at Navin Field. Later, in 1938, the field and stadium was expanded and was known as Briggs Stadium until 1961 when the name was changed to Tiger Stadium. The Tigers moved into a new their new home, Comerica Park, in the year 2000.
The Tigers have won 10 American League pennants. The last pennant was won in 2006. They also have won 4 World Series Championships in their long history. They won them in 1935,1945,1968 and 1984. The late George “Sparky” Anderson who is in baseball’s Hall of Fame managed the 1984 team.
Many great players have played for the Tigers. They include Ty Cobb, Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Hal Nedwhouser, Al Kaline, Willie Horton, Harry Heilmann, Heinie Manush, Sam Crawford, Mickey Cochrane, George Kell, Dick McAuliffe, Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Jack Morris and Kirk Gibson.
Over the years, the Tigers have had players win nine Most Valuable player Awards as well as three Cy Young and four Rookie of the year awards The have three Manager of the year award to the credit and eleven players are in the Hall of Fame.
Their lead broadcaster, the late Ernie Harwell, is also in the Hall of Fame.
The Tigers arrive with a record of 5 wins against 7 losses to start the season. In their last series against the American League Champion Texas Rangers,they won two out the three game played. Should be an exciting four game series this weekend with the A’s. The A’s are returning home having a 5-4 record on the first road trip of the year.
