Detroit pitching combined for a three-hit shutout Thursday at the Coliseum, as the Tigers blanked Oakland 3-0. It was the first time the A’s were shut out this season.
Ryan Raburn’s two-out RBI double broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning. Reliever Tyson Ross (1-1) took the loss for Oakland. A’s starter Gio Gonzales surrendered only two hits and extended his scoreless innings streak to 17, but Oakland pitching also combined for 11 walks.
Lefthander Phil Coke started and went seven strong innings for his first win of the season after two losses. Relievers Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde finished up. Valverde earned his third save.
Conor Jackson had two singles for the Athletics.
A’s ACORNS: Closer Andrew Bailey, on the disabled list for forearm strain, threw a 25-minute bullpen session, and right-hander Michael Wuertz, also on the DL with a hamstring pull, tossed a simulated inning. No timetable for either pitcher to return. … The A’s are 1-4 in series-opening games this season. … Brandon McCarthy (1-0) starts on the mound for Oakland Friday, facing the Tigers’ Rick Porcallo (0-2). First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
