After splitting the first two games of the series, the Mariners and Athletics again faced each other at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, with LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith and RHP Justin Duchscherer each getting an initial start for the 2010 season. As it turned out, neither would figure in the decision for a game where the score was knotted several times, the lead changed and was always thin, and the bullpens of both teams got plenty of work in.
The Athletics could have put it away early, but left at least one runner on base in all but two innings. In the ninth, they won, 6-5, when Kevin Kouzmanoff scored from first on Kurt Suzuki’s fly ball to deep left. It was the second key play of the night for the Oakland catcher, who hit one into the same spot two innings earlier, bringing home Mark Ellis, who also singled to left and advanced on Ryan Sweeney’s groundout to third.
Suzuki’s namesake Ichiro also played a prominent role in the A’s sparse accumulation of runs in the fourth, when he kicked a ball hit into right field by Travis Buck, giving him a double and scoring Daric Barton.
The win goes to reliever Jerry Blevins (0.1 ip, 1 w) and the loss to Mark Lowe (2 ip, 1 er, 1 k); Brandon League, who threw 40 pitches in relief, blew the save (1.2 ip, 4 h, 1 er).
The two teams meet again on Thursday, April 8 at 12:35 p.m. RHP Doug Fister faces southpaw Brett Anderson.
