The Oakland Athletics have led the major leagues in disable list usage over the last three seasons, and 2010 spring training isn’t offering any hints toward a new direction in that area.
On Tuesday, outfielder Coco Crisp strained his left hamstring. While he’ll certainly miss a few Cactus League games, Crisp expects to be ready by opening day.
Jay Marshall, the lefthander claimed from Oakland by the New York Mets on waivers back in January, was returned to the A’s when Mets team doctors discovered a pre-existing left shoulder injury. But Marshall is no longer a problem for the Athletics either; he was immediately released.
Joey Devine, the A’s righthander who underwent Tommy John surgery last season, struggled with his initial bullpen sessions. Oakland shut him down for at least a week and there’s a good chance he’ll reside on the DL when the season starts.
At the same time, right-hander Justin Duchscherer is progressing with his throwing sessions from the front of the mound. He’s using this regimen to ease irritation in his sacroiliac joint. Duchscherer was told not to throw off the mound for at least another two weeks. At the same time, it’s still possible he can be on the opening day roster.
Oakland visits Scottsdale Saturday for a Cactus League split-squad game with the San Francisco Giants while hosting a split-squadder with San Diego, and goes to Tempe Sunday for an exhibition against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
