Baseball is a game of list. There are list for best Batting Average, best Earned Run Average, best Fielding Percentage, etc. There is one list that everyone wants to avoid – the Disabled List.

For the past three seasons, the A’s have been decimated by the number of players spending time on the DL. In fact, the A’s set team records for use of the DL in 2008 and 2009. The team does not want to set a new record in 2010.

Eric Chavez is a prime example of the A’s being hurt by the Disabled List. Chavez has appeared in just 31 games over the past two seasons. The A’s have missed Chavez’s bat and experience on the field.

If the A’s are to have a successful 2010, they need players like Chavez to stay off the DL.

Health Watch:

• Eric Chavez is coming off back surgery. The A’s hope to use Chavez at first base and have his bat back in the line up. The team will ease Chavez back into the line up.

• Coco Crisp is joining the A’s after having both shoulders go under the knife. Crisp is expected to be a full participant this spring and be ready to go on Opening Night.

• Joey Devine is recovering from Tommy John surgery. The team expects him to be ready to work out of the bullpen by Opening Night.

• Ben Sheets missed the entire 2009 season due to elbow surgery. Sheets is ready to work in Spring Training and is expected to the starter on Opening Night.

• Dallas Braden has fully recovered from a foot infection that cost him the final month of the 2009 season.

• Justin Duchscherer had elbow surgery last March and has been battling lower back pain as camp has started.

• Ryan Sweeney did not have surgery on his knees. After resting the knees all winter, Sweeney is expected to be a full strength.
