OAKLAND--The new Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Gruber who bought the team for an NBA record $450 million are contemplating the official sale of the team and press conference that will introduce them as new owners. Gruber and Lacob knew that this sale was a close call after the much anticipated Oracle CEO Larry Ellison was expecting to plop down his bid and walk away with the team.
It was much like you bidding on a house and you finish all the paperwork and I'm trying to buy your house so maybe now Ellison can come back now and buy the team from Lacob and Gruber but it's going to be this group the new owners of Gruber and Lacob.
The Warriors are a great franchise and it's the most that anyone has ever paid for an NBA franchise, the W's sell out every game, they've only been in the playoffs twice in the last 14 seasons, they won one championship way before that in 1975 but they have great fans.
Until the Sharks arrived the best fans in the Bay Area are the Warriors fans, they sell out almost every game, they have miserable seasons but with new management they will have a new mentality and will get some new blood in there with the new management system and get a new coach. I like Nellie a lot and I traveled with him a couple of times when I was doing the games but it's time for a change.
Indictment of JaMarcus Russell: I feel sorry for former Raider quarterback JaMarcus Russell, he's a young man and he got that big contract with the Raiders. Owner Al Davis wants the money back he paid Russell and now I don't blame him. This will strengthen his argument to get his money returned.
I was wondering was he playing under that crap codeine I have no idea what he was taking nobody knows only Russell knows it's bad news for him, for his family for everybody. The stuff he was using codeine is noted for being widely abused in the drug community. The medicine is a combination of a anti histamine, Promethazine, and codeine.
If you drink enough of it you’re going to get yourself a nice little buzz. There was a pitcher for the Pirates Doc Ellis in 1971 who wrote a book and he pitched under the influence of LSD and my question is could Russell have been taking the codeine and was he playing under that? Could that be possible?
It's possible, and if you take enough of it or a lot of it it could make you very drowsy and that may have led to so many fumbles and so many sacks. He couldn't move as fast as he normally would.
I used to watch some of the plays that Russell ran and I used to wonder 'what is guy doing?' He's a young man, he's a big guy, the way he fumbled and he couldn't complete the passes, now I don't want to accuse the guy I don't know him personally or anything but it makes sense maybe he was under some kind of sedation. It's a terrible story, the NFL is a great league, it's the richest league in the United States and it makes a lot of money and TV generates billions of dollars and I really feel sorry for the kid.
Lou Piniella's retirement: He's 66 years old and at the end of the season he will be 67 and he will leave the Cubs for retirement and the Cubs haven't won since 1908. Former Giants manager Dusty Baker went to manage there now Dusty is running the Reds and he's winning in Cincinnati and he had a good run for ten years with the Giants and he couldn't win with the Cubs.
Piniella won the 1990 World Series against the A's as Reds manager I remember that one because I was doing the A's. Piniella had some good years against many teams with the Mariners loved him. I was broadcasting in Seattle when they had him and they had Lou Piniella Day.
I understand he doesn't need the headaches; I don't think anyone in our lifetime is going to win in Chicago with the Cubs. I wish Lou the best, I'm still not 100% convinced that Piniella is retiring from baseball. He might retire as a manager but he might be in some other capacity or he can do anything he wants.
Piniella could be an assistant to an owner or a scout but he has it in his blood. We’re going to miss his tirades against the umpires, I like to see managers with that fire. I like his style, I like Piniella, he's almost like a Billy Martin type of manager and I wish him nothing but the best. I can understand he's tired and he's 66 years old.
