ANAHEIM--A's reliever Andrew Bailey is back in the All-Star game he was there in St.Louis representing the A's last year and now in Anaheim this break. He had 18 saves including the one he had against the Angels to close out the first half in Oakland over the weekend.
Bailey is looking better and better and the way he's going he could save 35-40 games a year he's got a terrific arm and I remember a young Mariano Rivera that's basically why he remembers he always had that fast ball and Bailey he can get the job done.
This is a great story for the Oakland A's who at the end of the first half there only 7.5 games out of first place in the A.L. West. The West is still up for grabs except Seattle whose buried in the cellar. It's going to be a very interesting second half.
I'm very happy for Bailey he's not only a very good closer he's a very nice kid. I had a chance to spend about five minutes with him before a game against Los Angeles over the weekend and Bailey speaks well.
Braden and Anderson about ready to come back: A's pitcher Dallas Braden is a very bright young man and in talking with Braden regarding Alex Rodriguez of New York there is no war going on between them as publicized and the t-shirts were a misunderstanding with the front office of the A's.
When Anderson comes back then your going to have Cahill whose 9-3 and on the All-Star team and Gio Gonzalez whose pitching and has tremendous potential and Brett Anderson whose arguably the best pitcher the A's have.
You have Braden who when healthy will give you a great outing, and pitcher Ben Sheets won't be around long and General Manager Billy Beane will trade Sheets before the deadline the 31st of this month.
The A's are going to have a terrific young pitching staff, it's up to what can they do and can they continue to develop? Look at the Marlins they're developing great arms.
Looking back at the last All-Star game in Anaheim 1987: Looking back on the 1987 All-Star game Bo Jackson got the MVP in that one I and many of the Sportstalk team were at that All-Star game that year.
I was right there with Evilio Mendoza my former broadcast partner and former voice of the Oakland A's. Angels Stadium used to be called the Big A and the Big A used to be right behind left field and now they moved it next to the highway, highway 57 which goes all the way to Huntington Beach.
When the Angels win the halo on the Big A lights up but when the team loses the halo is dark. That's what they do with the Big A. It's a nice huge stadium and it should be a ball Tuesday night when they play.
I'm looking for the American League to keep its dominance, the A.L. has won in the last decade. The A.L. wins All-Star games, they win the World Series, they have the best record in Interleague. We have to conclude that the American League is the superior league for at least the last ten years.
