Singletary gets the boot

( SAN FRANCISCO )- Sunday after the San Francisco 49ers lost again , to the St.Louis Rams 25-17, the " young genius " Team President Jed York announced that " Iron Mike " Singletary was history ! Thus ends the saga of a cliche' spouting football icon who was willing to drop his pants to motivate his troops. Despite providing material for every late night show comedian, Singletary had to go ! Jed York to his credit was loyal to the point of almost going down with the ship. He picked him and he dumped him ! Just keeping that holliday spirit for the long suffering Niner fans. It didn't take long for Singletary's non-existant charm to wear off. He was former Chicago Bear who was a boring bear with the media everytime out. He was a football anti hero, squinting and grimacing ala Clint Eastwood. Unfortunately the 49ers weren't part of western movie and the B movie type cast Mike assembled didn't help either. The team became the joke of the NFL ! When he couldn't convince his players with one of his many slogans it was down to threatening and trying to humiliate them. It was downright embarassing ! The team ownership went out , spent big bucks on talent and than put a totally green coach in charge. Out went Mike Martz , only to be replaced by brand X ( Jimmy Raye ) and the return of fifties style football. There were high hopes for the San Francisco 49ers at the start of the season. Then reality hit ! In the very first game in Seattle, poor Alex Smith couldn't even get in his offensive plays let alone hit his receivers and it didn't get better as the season progressed. With sunglasses on at all times Singletary paced the sidelines during the games, barely able to refrain from physically throttling his players. In my stories I referred to Singletary's hiring as " The Experiment " . Can this present ownership right the ship ? This is a mystery right now ! They need to sack all the talented amateurs in their organization and hire real football professionals. You can't spend all your time marketing an image and neglect what made the team a major brand to start with, how they actually play ! Somewhere along the way the nuts and bolts of running a sport's team got lost in the schuffle ! It didn't help to have the outgoing Mayor and the Yorks engaged in a contest of egos which led to the projected move to Santa Clara. The failure of Singletary was just the tip of the iceberg. The lifetime 49er fans, the beer drinking, blue collar types who inherited their season tickets from their parents aren't going to go to the boondocks to watch the team ! All the text messaging,laptop techie fans in the Silicon valley will never equal the hardcore fans the Niners already have. Nowadays there are so many distractions besides professional football. I believe that Singletary was totally sincere when he was grateful for having had the opportunity to coach the team. Who wouldn't be grateful for being able to jump over all the qualified candidates and based on nothing more than bluff take over the reins of one of the most storied and successful football team ! This fan hopes all the people in the 49er ownership who believe they know ,do the smart thing and turn the team over to professionals. Mike, see you on the lecture tour soon ! I need motivation to watch the team again ! |
