The future of this team is up in the air and it really comes down to what is going to happen with Mike Nolan and nobody really knows at this point some people who are on the inside track seem to think that Nolan is going to get one more year while his critics think that his rift with Alex Smith and the way the season's been handled especially at quarterback and the situation with Smith, Trent Dilfer, and Shaun Hill and the problems on the offense.
Some people think that because of those bad situations and problems that people think that Nolan won't be back. You have to remember that a lot of these situations are unknown because Jed York the son of 49ers owners John and Denise York is taking over the team soon and the ownership is changing a little bit.
It looks like Jed is going to be taking over the franchise and most of the team operations and that John and Denise will be stepping down and move back to Youngstown Ohio and nobody knows how Jeb feels about this as oppose to his dad John. So while this is all speculation and we really don't have much of an idea how the Niners are going to treat Nolan and until we have some idea what Nolan's fate is as the 49ers head coach it's really going to be tough to predict what is going to happen.
Now if the 49ers end up sticking with Nolan and they very well might and a lot of the problems might stem from the offense and that and if they would just fix the offensive coordinator position then maybe the team would come around and this is a playoff caliber team.
On some levels Nolan might deserve another shot partly because the offense was so bad but at the same time you got to look at it and think he's the head coach he's suppose to be in charge of everything if the offense is bad it's his fault and you can't blame it on the fact that the Niners lost former offensive coordinator Norv Turner last season.
Now that the 49ers have an inexperienced replacement in Jim Hostler it's Nolan's job to fix that stuff and he clearly didn't do it and the Niners really haven't done well on offense all season long. Despite these last couple of games that the Niners have won against Arizona and Cincinnati the offense hasn't been anywhere close to what it could have been last year under Norv Turner.
The one thing you can say with Nolan he's definitely improved the talent on this team since he's been on this team. The team the 49ers had when Dennis Erickson was coaching, the talent was horrible, the team was horrible and lousy and Nolan took a crappy team and infused it with a lot of talent and a lot of that is that the Niners have a lot of money in free agency.
Nolan has grabbed a lot of great talented players and this team is a much more attractive team as far as the actual players are concerned it was three years ago and you could argue that Nolan should get chance to really put these guys through their paces and give them one more shot and see if he can turn things around with the proper coaching staff.
If you ask me Nolan should be gone, I think his handling of the offense has been horrible, I think his rift with Smith is inexcusable and I think that coach Nolan has had a lot of chances and his coaching skills have shown to be lacking.
Final thought: The 49ers are vying to try and shore up the $51 million short fall the City of Santa Clara will not pay in order to make a new stadium possible. The Niners have said that they will use all sources to try and get the $51 mill including from the NFL.
Surprisingly no one blinked too much when the NFL was mentioned and that it's the first time that the NFL would kick in for building a stadium for an NFL team especially after the league had said that they wanted the team to remain in San Francisco to concur with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom who said that he's still exploring the Hunters Point site for a new stadium site a site that John York detests.
The 49ers play their final home game against Jon Gruden and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night kick off is at 5:30PM.
