SANTA CLARA--The San Francisco 49ers brought in Alex Smith as the starting quarterback after quarterback Troy Smith didn't pass the test with head coach Michael Singletary. Alex came in after having sat out the last several weeks and had one of the best games of his career.
Alex throwing three touchdown passes it was really a fascinating game, Alex was completing passes he wasn't making the bad throws, he wasn't throwing interceptions, he wasn't turning the ball over, he wasn't putting the ball in the ground, he came in and looked calm and poised.
Which everybody on the 49ers were a bit surprised that he did none of those things as the 49ers quarterback. He came in and threw touchdown passes to Vernon Davis, Josh Morgan, Brian Westbrook, and generally the 49ers offense was rolling.
They could do no wrong against the Seattle defense and on the flip side the Seattle offense could do no right against the Niners defense. The defense pressured quarterback Matt Hassleback forcing bad plays and turnovers. Hassleback suffered a season high of interceptions the defense stopped the running game.
This was just a great all around performance by the 49ers, the big question really is did 49ers fans care? A lot of people know this has not been a good season for the 49ers Alex has not looked good at quarterback. Singletary has made a lot of questionable decisions at head coach and just generally speaking has not been particularly good at play calling, decision making, on the sidelines during these games.
Whats really interesting is that I know a lot of 49ers fans who question whether they should even root for the Niners for the rest of this season. A lot of 49ers fans feel like if they really want to root for the 49ers they should really be rooting for them to lose right now because they don't want Alex back as the quarterback next season.
They don't want Singletary or his coaching staff to be back next season and the only way to make sure that doesn't happen is to root against the 49ers and to have them lose for pretty much the rest of the way so they won't be back in 2011.
So you have the odd sight of 49ers fans wanting to improve and figuring a way in order for the 49ers improve in 2011 they have to keep losing in 2010 and that's a very legitimate question. Why? Even if the 49ers have a chance at making the playoffs which they do right now they only have a chance at making the playoffs at best as an 8-8 team that's the best record the 49ers can have this season.
If the 49ers somehow manage to make the playoffs it's not completely out of the question it would not be too hard for the 49ers to pull it off. If the 49ers make it to the playoffs their going to be one of the worst teams in the playoffs. Their going to be one of those teams that everybody picks against and all the gamblers bet against them, all the prognosticators will pick against them.
They'll have every right over the course of this season the 49ers will clearly have earned the title worse team in the playoffs and your going to hear a lot of people saying "hey if you want to make it into the playoffs you have to get a winning record" or at least an 8-8 record. The 49ers at this point could actually make the playoffs without having a winning record and they could conceivably get in with a 7-9 record.
