If you listen to 49ers head coach Mike Nolan he says there is no conflict between him and quarterback Alex Smith. The talk of the feud has taken up much of the conversation about the Niners in either direction.

Nolan is insisting that Smith can play on his injured shoulder and Smith saying the coach doesn't know how bad the injury is and that he has to stay off the shoulder. This talk has gone on for four weeks now and Nolan had addressed the media on Wednesday saying that there is no substance to such talk and that the subject was not a distraction to the team.

"He (Smith) never wanted to be a distraction to the team, that was the main gist. That was the reason to get in front of the team and put an end to it," said Nolan.

Smith said that the team was a family unit and that conflicts happen with people and it's time to move past it all. The misunderstanding is duly noted and that coach just wanted Smith in the line up badly and that the 49ers put a lot of hope in Smith getting in every game. Smith knows where Nolan was coming from but there was no way he could even get in the game he was just too smashed up from taking all the hits this past season.

"He addressed the article yesterday and more than anything else, I thought he handled it like a man. He just addressed the team as you would a family, made a statement and moved on. I thought he was very mature about how he handled it." said the other injured quarterback Trent Dilfer.

Smith and Nolan met on Tuesday and talked things over and basically concluded that much of the talk in the press has been over Nolan wanting Smith to start even though Smith was saying he couldn't because of the injury and that Nolan was disappointed in Smith and that he was too soft. Nolan and Smith after talking agree that could be further from the truth basically Nolan wanted Smith in the line up but with an injury there simply was no way for that to happen.

With Dilfer out this coming Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals Shaun Hill will make his first start of the season. Hill was impressive when taking over for Dilfer who got injured on a play against the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday at Candlestick Park.

The 49ers host the Bengals at 5:30PM Saturday night at Candlestick Park.
