Lambeau field, Wisconsin- For one half the San Francisco 49ers provided competition for the Greenbay Packers. With the temperature a chilly 23 degrees the Niners got off to good start on their first possession of the game, driving downfield and scoring on a Jeff Reed field goal. Unfortunately this would just be indicative of their inability to score touchdowns in the red zone. The Pack stumbled around on offense in the first quarter but were only behind 6-0. At first the 49ers changed up on the Greenbay defense by passing in four of their first six plays.

Greenbay scored two touchdowns in the second quarter as the Niners defense started to display difficulty in tackling. Niner TE Vernon Davis scored a touchdown on a 66 yard pass play and was a problem for the Pack all game long. The Niners got to Aaron Rodgers twice in the first half and the score was 14-13 in favor of the Pack at the half.

In the second half Greenbay woke up and Aaron Rodgers dissected the Niner's defensive secondary. Their leading receiver Greg Jennings broke tackle after tackle and scored his second touchdown of the game. Donald Driver didn't catch many balls but dragged Niner tacklers all over the field when he did and scored on a 61 yard touchdown. By this time the Pack shut down the 49er's running game and had Troy Smith on the run.

The end of the third quarter and almost the entire fourth quarter consisted of the Packers keeping the ball on the ground. Despite predictably running the ball straight up the middle Greenbay wasn't stopped by the Niner defense which suffered all game long from terrible tackling. When the 49ers had the ball all they could muster was one more field goal by the newly acquired Jeff Reed. Troy Smith suffered sacks when he failed to just throw the ball away. His accuracy was questionable.

The tenuous opportunity the 49ers had of reaching the playoffs is all but gone now. The Seattle Seahawks and St.Louis won while Arizona lost. In the final analysis a team can't win when their opponent holds on to the ball for almost forty minutes and your defense can't tackle. It will be merciful for Niner fans when the long season finally ends. In this case hope does not spring eternal !
