Arizona- The San Francisco 49ers kept their playoff hopes alive by beating a totally inept Arizona Cardinals team 27-6 . The positive buzz of victory lost some of its flavor due to the injury to running back Frank Gore in the first half. Gore reportedly sustained a fractured hip which will probably keep him out for the rest of the season. It was the type of game that Niner coach " Iron Mike " relishes. The Niners amassed 261 rushing yards against the Arizona defense.
The game was effectively over in the first half with the 49ers leading 21-6 at the break. Quarterback Troy Smith only attempted 23 passes .Brian Westbrook was pressed into duty after Gore was injured and rumbled for 136 yards on 23 carries and scored a touchdown. Receiver Michael Crabtree hauled in a 37 yard reception for a touchdown which was the highlight of the Niner's passing game. Arizona could only muster 13 yards on 11 carries with their anemic running attack. Their quarterback Derek Anderson performed as billed by overthrowing receivers , fumbling once and throwing one interception.
The Niners shouldn't be overjoyed about this important victory. With an upcoming game with the Green Bay Packers the offense will need more than a running game to be victorious. For now the Niners are only one game behind the St. Louis Rams and the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC west race. Arizona lost their sixth straight contest which probably explained why Derek Anderson had a meltdown at the postgame podium. This would never happen with Coach Singletary who when encountering any question he doesn't care to answer merely refers to the game tape.
