After being injured for a few weeks, and having a bye to rest things just a little bit, it looked like the right time for 49ers quarterback Alex Smith to make a comeback. But Smith was still holding his shoulder and by the way the offensive linemen were playing the shoulder had been bothering him and it's been generally their ineffective of play for Smith which compounded the issue.

Smith will get the bench and he will rest up and get that shoulder healed up as Smith knows his limitations, and Smith will measure when he will be back if not for the rest of the season but none the less Dilfer goes back under center. He will be the quarterback for the time being and Dilfer faces the Rams who do not have a particularly good defense but should have a decent offense now. Remember the Niners have only two victories this season and one of them was in week two against the Rams.

So the Niners have a shot in this one if they can get back to grinding it out with Frank Gore they'll have a shot but the way the 49ers are playing defense this season it's anybody's guess. The Niners could actually put up decent offensive numbers to finish up the season but the way the Niners have been playing its tough to feel confident that their offense is going to do well.

This season is going to be one of the worse offensive seasons certainly in 49ers history if not in the history of the NFL, for offensive performance, which has been nothing short of dreadful and the Niners really need to find a way to right the ship. In fact I don't know how it's going to happen if you watch that game last Monday against Seattle more power to you if you did most people were probably flipping that off I mean on the remote.

In that game last Monday in Seattle, the Niners just put on a horrific show and the Niners were barley able to get six first downs in the entire game their offense couldn't get anything going. It's not like the Seahawks are a power house and they're first place in the NFC West and that's not saying much as the NFC West is probably the worst division in all of football and Seattle is really not that good of a team.

The Seahawks are only the best in the west by default at this point, and they ran right over the Niners and they stopped the Niners offense and at this point it's really not even about the quarterback per say, it's about the entire offense functioning together. And a lack of function and about an offensive line that's not doing a good enough job protecting the quarterback.

At the same time, Smith who is not doing enough of a good job of getting the ball to a receiver and finding him in the right spot. The receivers are dropping the passes and Frank Gore and Michael Robinson are trying to do a admirable job trying to run behind the line but at the same time there is only so much they can do.

They're trying to get things done with what they have to work with, Gore is not any different than the guy who almost got 1700 yards last year starting in the Pro Bowl. The difference has been in the offensive line play.

You can't blame the whole thing on offensive coordinator Jim Hostler, but the Niners certainly do not have enough consistency across the board on offense and the way the teams have been playing if Hostler is coaching. In one respect you can't have an offense that gets 110 yards in the NFL but at the same time it's going to be another offensive coordinator and it's tougher to have any offensive continuity and the 49ers will have a revolving door on the offense and if they fire Hostler they will have four offensive coordinators in four years.
