This 2010 season the 1 and 6 San Francisco 49ers haven't scared anyone but they played well enough in London to spoil Halloween for the struggling Denver Broncos. The Broncos didn't rebound from their 59-14 blowout to the Oakland Raiders. The Niners with third string quarterback Troy Smith filling in for an injured Alex Smith played conservative and managed to win.
The first half of the game was snoozefest that resulted in a 10 to 10 tie. The 49er defense gave Bronco quarterback Kyle Orton time to pass and ex-Niner wide receiver Brandon Lloyd had a good game but it didn't result in very much scoring. The new NFL rules on high hits resulted in a few penalties for the Niner defense. When it counted the secondary held Denver.
In the second half the Niners scored 21 points to pull away from the Broncos. Troy Smith used his mobility to avoid being sacked and made no turnovers. The 49er defense pressured Kyle Orton. San Francisco scored on a 1 yard run by Smith, a pass to Michael Crabtree and a short run by Frank Gore. The Niners only attempted only 19 passes, with Frank Gore handling most of the work running for 118 yards on 29 attempts. In the waning moments of the fourth quarter Shawntae Spencer intercepted a Kyle Orton pass to end any threat that Denver posed to the second Niner victory of the season. The downside to the victory was the ankle injury to tight end Vernon Davis and an injury to defense lineman Justin Smith.
Somehow coach Mike Singletary didn't have another meltdown and kept a rather low profile. There was some hard hitting in the game to show the Londoners the difference between guys running around in knee socks and shorts with no scoring and good old American style football. Fortunately for the image of the USA the 49ers and Broncos didn't completely stink up Wembly stadium. Almost a jolly good show !
