Facing the hapless 0-5 Carolina Panthers the San Francisco 49ers had reason to believe that they could collect their second victory of this disastrous 2010 season. Sloppy play, bad luck and poor coaching combined for another defeat. Carolina coach John Fox who will not return next season was desperate to salvage some respectability from the Panthers disappointing start. With an assist from the Niners he left the stadium with his head held high.

After the Niners scored early in the first quarter on a Vernon Davis touchdown reception and much early success running against the Carolina defense, shadows appeared on the horizon. The score at halftime was 10 to 10. The Panther's defense had started beating rookie offensive lineman Anthony Davis like a drum.

At the start of the second half the game situation took a turn for the worse when Carolina defensive lineman Charles Johnson went right around Anthony Davis, sacked quarterback Alex Smith and put him out of the game. The hometown fans critical of Smith got a preview of what backup David Carr could do. It was a nightmare ! Carr was totally out of his element with wild throws and generally stumbling around in the backfield. Offensive coordinator Mike Johnson continued to use the same play calls until Carolina stuffed the run out.

Late in the third quarter Niner linebacker Ray Mcdonald intercepted an errant Matt Moore pass and rumbled 31 yards for a touchdown. This put the 49ers in the lead 20-13. Both teams had scored on field goals prior to this. This was the last bright spot in the game for the Niners. On offense the 49ers could not get anything going under the direction of the clueless David Carr.

With the game lead going into the fourth quarter the usually reliable Niner defense had a meltdown allowing Carolina's rookie receivers David Gettis and Brandon LaFell to run wild in the secondary , leading to the Panthers to another score to tie the game at 20 to 20. The Niner secondary of Taylor Mays, Shawntae Spencer and Nate Clements made Panther quarterback Matt Moore look like Johnny Unitas.

With David Carr leading the 49er offense went nowhere. Panther's kicker John Kasay kicked a field goal putting the score at 23 to 20 with only 35 seconds on the clock, icing the game for Carolina. Niner coach " Iron Mike " Singletary was beside himself with frustration during the game and faces an uncertain future. The Niners committed 11 penalties for 81 yards and he has to answer for that.

Now the 49ers travel to London for their next game against the Denver Broncos, their once proud football franchise in ruins. Niner president " the boy genius " Jed York should reconsider his predictions about his team's eventual record and new stadium fantasy. The experiment is over ! Everyone has been biting their tongues not being real. The Niners need a legitimate general manager, head coach Offensive coordinator and probably another Defensive coordinator. This season is a wash !
