SANTA CLARA--49ers wide receiver hopeful Michael Crabtree is trying to get a deal done this week well before Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Michael Singletary said, "We need every good player we can get in here and I'm not going to turn away someone like Crabtree, get him in here."
Crabtree's agent Eugene Parker flew into San Jose Airport Tuesday to meet with 49ers executives in the beginning process to get a deal done. Parker made it no secret that he wanted to get this done in time for Sunday's game with the Falcons and to get Crabtree ready to take some throws from 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill.
Hill commented earlier this week saying, "I haven't thrown one pass to him (Crabtree) yet" but it maybe sooner than Hill thinks. After getting drafted by the 49ers sources have told Sportstalk that Crabtree was not exactly thrilled about going to an NFL team that had not made the playoffs since 2002 and didn't consider the 49ers a marquee team.
Crabtree has missed a total of nine games which include pre season games and over 50 scheduled practices while holding out. Crabtree is a heavy odds on favorite to get this deal done this week. The New York Jets according to the New York Daily News had contacted Parker and tried to express interest in Crabtree. The 49ers found out after they were told if they would drop interest in Crabtree and in doing so it would be a big pay day for the Niners if they let him go to the Jets.
The Daily News also said that sources said that Crabtree indeed was contacted by the Jets. The 49ers have since filed tampering charges with the league office and the Commissioner's office has not made a determination of any tampering made by the Jets.
Meanwhile the 49ers were winning ball games and that's exactly what Crabtree wanted to be involved with a winning team that was going to the playoffs. A deal that could be signed could have Crabtree with the Niners through 2010. Sources have said that the 49ers having a winning record was part of the reason why Parker wants to deal now with a team that has post season value. Money stands to be the only stigma and Parker is going to try and get the 49ers to raise that $20 million price tag.
49ers week in review: Nothing like playing the St.Louis Rams who maybe the worst team in football this year. You play the Rams that's a good cure for whatever ails you. To be fair the 49ers didn't really ail they were in pretty good shape and they had a very good game against the Vikings the week before.
They just kind of got stuck in the end by that last second touchdown pass from Viking quarterback Brett Farve. By no means did the 49ers play poorly in that game. Except for that very last play they executed pretty well for all 58 minutes and it was just those last two seconds that did them in in the Metrodome.
Against the St.Louis Rams it was a completely different story, the 49ers played the Rams and they played one of the worst team's in football and that's always good news when you play a decent team like the 49ers.
The 49ers played kind of a little bit slowly and the Rams came out of with a little bit of a fight and they're not a very talented team and they certainly didn't give up and to show for it they sacked Hill four times and was hit six times.
In a certain point in the game the 49ers talent and skill ended up winning out. The 49ers were a little sluggish earlier but they had muffed a punt by the Rams which they scored a touchdown on and that put them up 7-0 at the half. In the second half the 49ers just turned it on with an interception return for a touchdown by Patrick Willis and a touchdown pass to Vernon Davis, a touchdown pass to Josh Morgan, a fumble recovery which was returned for a touchdown by defensive end Ray McDonald and that was it.
The rest of the game was just boom, boom, boom. The defense really set the tone they got everybody running around playing tough and hard and before you know it the Niners had a 35-0 shutout and it was one of those weird games they won 35-0 but the offense was okay they could have been a lot better and a lot of people were certainly impressed with the defense.
Talk show host Limbaugh to buy Rams: Well if the Rams loss to the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday was not enough news for the team they are close to being bought by talk show host Rush Limbaugh and St.Louis Blues owner Dave Cheketts.
The Rams are the NFL's worst team with a losing streak of 14 straight losses and are 5-31 since 2007. Limbaugh has said that he and Cheketts are close to getting a deal done. The Rams are listed by Forbes Magazine as having a value of $929 million.
Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez are 60% owners and children of the late owner Georgia Frontiere of the team and billionaire Stan Kroenke is 40% owner. What is still in question is if Limbaugh and Cheketts are purchasing 100% of the team or just Rosenbloom and Rodriguez' share leaving Kroenke as part owner.
Limbaugh said,"Dave Cheketts and I have made a bid to buy the Rams and we are continuing the process."
Rosenbloom said that an announcement is coming soon but the details of the purchase are not complete as of Tuesday, "our strategic review of our ownership of the Rams continues, we will make an announcement upon completion of the process."
