For the third time in a row, the San Francisco 49ers are facing a opponent with the same record. Will the result be the same? The offense will really have to shine as Trent Dilfer, filling in for injured starter Alex Smith at quarterback, will be facing his former team and another strong defense. San Francisco currently has the worst offense in the National Football League.
Frank Gore is still looking for his first 100-yard game and the 49ers has been held to under 200 yards in three games. The prognosis for Smith, who tore both ligaments in his shoulder, is at best after SF’s bye week next week but at worst several weeks before he returns to the field.
Baltimore had the best defense in the NFL last year, but has allowed opponents a minimum of 300 yards for three straight games. Still they have not allowed a 100-yard rusher for seven straight games and have the fourth best run defense in the league. Willis McGahee and Steve McNair are coming off season-highs despite a team loss.
If Dilfer wants to make a statement, this is the best time to make it. The team dropped him after an 11-1 run and Super Bowl win. His last and only start against them since was less than impressive. It’ll be a tough challenge indeed, but one worth striving for. Why not? Borrowing McDonald’s slogan, hey, “it can happen”.
Predictions: The Ravens by 70% of Yahoo! Sports Pro Football Pick’em users, 3 out of 5 of Yahoo! Sports experts, and Sporting News fan blogs with a score of 7-6.
