SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS at ARIZONA CARDINALS
SUNDAY, Sept. 13, 1:15 p.m.
Radio KNBR-AM 1050
TV – FOX 2
What to Expect: Legitimate or not, there is a lot of optimism in Niners land as San Francisco looks to get back to the playoffs for the first time in years. They don’t exactly get a break on opening day however with the defending NFC champs first on their list. The last time the clubs met, back in Week 10, Cards QB Kurt Warner tossed for 328 yards and three TDs as the Cards spanked the 49ers 29-24, aided by a last second goal yard stand aided by some questionable 49ers play calling. These two NFL war-horses have been playing for decades and while San Francisco leads the all time series 19-16, the redbirds have won six of the past eight contests.
The Good Guys:
For the first time in his seven-year career, Shaun Hill enters the season as a starter. If he wants to hold onto that job, he needs to produce. His first chance to do so comes against the Cardinals in Week 1… San Francisco WR Isaac Bruce ranks second in career receiving yards (14,934) all-time. ... 49ers TE Vernon Davis have caught a touchdown in three straight games against the Cardinals…
The Bad Guys: Cardinals QB Kurt Warner has won nine of his 10 career starts against the Niners…. Cards WR Larry Fitzgerald is coming off perhaps the greatest postseason by a wide receiver in NFL history. He had 30 catches for 546 yards and seven touchdowns in four playoff games, and even caught a TD in the Pro Bowl… Arizona went 0-4 in preseason.
Coaches Corner:
Head coach Mike Singletary on opening on the road:
In all honesty, I’m just thankful we’re playing our first game. I’m excited. Whether it’s on the road, whether it’s in Candlestick, I don’t really care. I’m just excited for our guys to see where we are. That’s really what I want, and to have a team like that is really a tremendous opportunity for us. So, I’m excited about that.”
