The San Francisco 49ers remain unbeaten in pre-season football by beating the
Oakland Raiders in Oakland by a 28-24 score. The Coliseum crowd of 42,248 was
loud for the unusually exciting game.
The third pre-season affair is a good look at who will start and play during the regular season. In the final pre-season matchup things are a little
more low key.
The Raiders, starting Jason Campbell at quarterback, marched right down the
field to score on a one yard run by Michael Bush. Both teams had drives that
went nowhere. Then Joe Nedney kicked a 28 yard field goal after a drive
stalled at the ten.
The Niners stopped the Raiders. Shane Lechler's punt was returned 83 yards
by rookie Phillip Adams for a touchdown. He split the seam and went right
through the Raiders special teams for the score on a beautiful play.
The Niners got the ball and Alex Smith moved the team down the field,
hitting Josh Morgan for the 16 yard TD reception, making the score 17-7.
Romp? Well Bruce Gradkowski, in for Campbell who had his bell rung on a
sack by Travis LaBoy, hit Louis Murphy on a 74 yard pass to make it 17-14.
Murphy got behind the Niners secondary and it was a footrace to the endline.
Murphy was as open as anyone you will ever see.
The second half scoring was a 27 yard pass from Gradkowski to Zack Miller.
The teams then traded field goals, a 38 yard effort by Shane Andrus and
a scary 57 yarder by Sebastian Janikowski.
The fourth quarter march the Niners used about seven minutes and ended when
Anthony Dixon scored from one yard out. David Carr passed to Nate Bynum
for the two point conversion to make the score 28-24. Also to keep from
Janikowski possibly tying the game on a long field goal.
The problems were the 10 penalties on San Francisco and eight on Oakland.
But there were no fumbles or interceptions.
No doubt both teams are improved, how much is anyone's guess.
