SANTA CLARA--49ers quarterback Shaun Hill has proven himself in the last year and half as the 49ers starter as he has won seven of his last ten games he's performed well. He's proven that head coach Mike Singletary can trust him and has made good decisions on the field and he's just kind of earned it.
He really didn't do anything spectacular in the pre season he kind of played his normal state of football that he played in the past and really when you think of it Hill came to the pre season as the favorite for the job as quarterback and at the very least he was the incumbent.
He has the job and he has the trust of the team he would have to lose the job or Alex Smith would have to go crazy and play outstanding football in order to surpass Hill on the depth chart. Smith didn't do that he played okay and he did well in practice from all reports and he played okay in the first two pre season games.
Smith hurt his thumb the other day and his play was only okay it wasn't any better than what Hill was doing and with a hurt thumb in the second to the last pre season game coming up in Dallas on Saturday and the fact that at this point in the pre season you want to kind of and get everybody in sink and get the whole first team ready to go Singletary had to name somebody and that's Hill.
Hill is the guy whose the best he's the guy whose got the trust of the whole team he's the guy whose proven himself during the regular season something that Smith hasn't really done yet and Singletary feels comfortable going with Hill and he knows what he's going to get.
Now if Hill can be successful and lead the team to the post season that's something that the Niners are going to have to wait and see. However Hill has shown himself to be a steady starter a guy who can run the 49ers offense and be a good game manager and that's what the Niners are looking for.
The 49ers aren't looking for Joe Montana or Steve Young right now obviously they would like to have guys like or even someone like a Jeff Garcia but under an new offense under offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye the running back is going to be the focus with Frank Gore and Glenn Coffee and to a lesser extent Michael Robinson.
Those guys are going to be the focus on the offense and Hill is going to have to manage that game well. Hill is going to have to manage that game well. Obviously he can hand off and make those quick short throws, he can make those medium throws and even the long ones when he has to.
He's not the center piece of the offense so what Hill brings to the table he's actually good for what the 49ers offense plans to do how he does whether he succeeds that's anybody's guess at this point we have to wait until the season starts but Hill has really proven himself in the previous seasons and Singletary has rewarded Hill by giving him the starting job. Now we get to see what he can do.
