The San Francisco 49ers made a valiant effort Soldier Field on Saturday night against the Chicago Bears, with a narrow 31-28 decision by the Bears. It might be pre-season, but the Niners made a solid effort in the second half to get back into the game but fell short in the end.
Alex Smith started the game for the 49ers at quarterback and went 4 for 8 for 47 yards with no touchdowns. Trent Dilfer came in the second half and went 9 for 12 in the passing department, with two touchdowns to his credit.
The Bears opened things up in the first quarter with a touchdown by Cedric Benson on a pass from Rex Grossman at 3:23 to get Chicago on top 7-0.
Bears kicker Robbie Gould booted a 37-yard field goal to give the Bears a 10-0 advantage at 7:19 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Bears scored on all touchdowns by Bernard Berrian, Desmond Clark, and Adrian Peterson. The 49ers had touchdowns by Maurice Hicks and Walt Harris for a 31-13 half time score.
In the third quarter, neither team scored and the score stayed 31-13.
In the fourth quarter, the Bears did not score at all and the 49ers made a run at the Bears but could not catch them. After five seconds in the fourth quarter, Trent Dilfer found Zach Hilton on a three-yard pass to make the score 31-20 Chicago.
At 1:59 left in the game, Jason Hill caught a nine-yard from Dilfer and the two-point conversion was good as the 49ers fell short by a field goal in the 31-28.
Next game: The 49ers will be playing their last pre season game on Thursday at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, as they will face the Chargers for a 7PM kick off.
