What to Expect: The mother of all exhibitions. The Raiders and 49ers have been battling it out in the summer since the beginning of time. Well at least since 1960 when the Silver and Black and AFL entered the pro ranks. The match may temporarily give bragging rights to one side of the Bay, but in the end it’s just a glorified scrimmage. Oakland honcho Tom Cable brings his jaw breakers into the ‘Stick coming off an impressive victory vs. Dallas in the pre-season’s first tilt a week ago. Mike Singletary’s Niners also notched a win in their first game vs. Denver. The starters on both sides will play more this time around, but were still a good three week’s from the games that count so don’t expect to see the play book in all its glory from both sides of the field… In past seasons the Bay rovalry has heated up to the point where punches have been thrown, including an incident in the late 1970s when the assistant coaches from both sides have squared off.
When the 49ers have the ball: Last season’s starter Shaun Hill didn’t see a lot of action vs. Denver, but showed enough to keep a hold on the No. 1 QB role for the time being… Alex Smith was 5-of-7 for 33 yards and tossed a touchdown pass but also looked stiff at times, a year after arm surgery. Third stringer Damon Huard also will get snaps… RB Frank Gore will play a series or two before donning a coat on the sidelines… Alabama rookie RB Glen Coffee gained 67 yards on 14 carries last week will get his touches, as will Purdue rook Kory Sheets who opened eyes with 51 yards on 10 tries… FB Brit Miller a rookie out of Illinois has emerged as a cult favorite, scoring a pair of TDs vs. Denver.
When the 49ers are on Defense: The Niners defense will have their hands full with second year RB Darren McFadden, who powered for 63 yards on just four totes last week… Third year RB Gary Russell entered his name into Oakland’s scheme running for 44 yards vs. Dallas… LB Patrick Willis probably will sit out again this week after missing a couple dozen practices with an ankle and Achilles…
Coaches Corner:
Head coach Mike Singletary on what he watches in pre-season tilts:
Everything. I just try and stay focused on all of the things that I can. They are certain things that are more important to me than others and I have to [look at] the other things. My eyes are everywhere."
