This last Sunday the Scaryone stayed in the bay area and tuned in on the preseason game of the 49ers versus the Indianapolis Colts. It immediately seemed to me that the NFL Network coverage was also in the preseason mode not just the play of the two teams.
With the graphics displayed I couldn't figure out what the down was, highlight clips were shown just as plays were ending. On one particular play after a 49er receiver made a catch there was an immediate cutaway to a highlight from another game. I never learned who made the reception.
The play by play banter was just jock talk and not particularly entertaining. In the middle of the game coverage was shifted by my cable carrier from the NFL Network to a CBS affiliate. The contrast was immediate. The camera angles were more professional, the graphics made following the progress of the game easy to follow and the commentary by ex 49er Eric Wright and his fellow broadcaster was thoughtful and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the game.
With big time sports being a cash cow everyone wants in on the payoff. Now the quality of television coverage and reporting is being watered down. In addition to the NFL Network the cable carrier Comcast is in the mix. Their claim to fame is a middle aged sportscaster who doesn't wear a tie and sports a sweater. Boy you can't much more exciting than that ! Another member of this charismatic crew was on the top local sports radio program Monday and had to be coaxed into producing anything worthwhile to listen to. What a stiff !
Just suppose fans, if CNN decided to compete with MTV and cover pop music videos. This would be almost same as what is happening with the NFL and Comcast trying to cash in on television sports. The talent level is paper thin and the technical part is wanting. It is too simple to think just spending the money will get the job done right !
Just plugging ex jocks in will not legitimize a flawed product, so if you selling hamburgers its not a good idea to move on to steaks ! As I have said in the past fans. Just turn the sound of the television down and listen to the radio coverage. It’s better that way ! Over and out.
