In this march 20, 2009 file photo, San Francisco 49ers' Frank Gore looks on at the team's NFL football minicamp in Santa Clara, Calif. Gore hasn't taken a day off through the first 10 days of camp and hasn't asked for one, either. That effort and energy is catching on with his offensive linemen and others. The coaches are closely monitoring Gore's workload to make sure he stays healthy and fresh, and he will be limited in Friday's exhibition opener against Denver. (AP Photo)

When the 49ers have the ball: Its the first pre-season game, don’t expect to see anything but the basics and plenty of in and out appearances by the starters. QBs Shaun Hill and Alex Smith compete in earnest for the starting signal calling role. RB Frank Gore returns to be the main focus of the offense. WR Isaac Bruce is back as well as Josh Morgan who will man the other wide out slot until Mike Crabtree, the No. 1 pick out of Texas Tech aggress to terms. TE Vernon Davis starts what could be a pivotal season of his career under coach Mike Singletary.

When the 49ers are on Defense: The new kid on the block for the Denver offense is rookie RB Knowshon Moreno out of Georgia and QB Kyle Orton a fifth year player out of Purdue acquired from the Bears for disgruntled QB Jay Cutler. Brandon Marshall, Cliff Russell and Michael Pittman make up the receiving corps. LB Takeo Spikes and Patrick Willis anchor the SF defense.

Coaches Corner:

49ers head man Mike Singletary on how the pre-season play will affect the QB race:

“That is part of it. Hopefully, as we said before, by the third pre-season game we will have a pretty decent idea. There’s no guarantee I will name someone by then, but hopefully at that time we will. But yes, I think the pre-season games play a big role. We are going against somebody totally different. We just have to see how they respond, how the team responds to them, how they respond to the pass rush – all those little things. So, I’m excited about the games.”
