SANTA CLARA--The 49ers are getting started with pre season football camp as they go to it next week opening up with the San Diego Chargers on Thursday the 13th. They've been knocking heads for a few days right now the 49ers are sorting out some things in camp.

Number one on the list the team is trying to figure out whose going to be quarterback, Sean Hill or Alex Smith that's really kind of the big question at this point nobody knows for sure not even head coach Mike Singletary he's giving them both equal chances seems like every single day one of them gets some time with the first team then the next day the other guy gets sometime with the first team.

Singletary is giving Hill and Smith a shot who ends up on top is anybody's guess if you ask me my guess it will still be Sean Hill he went 7-3 as a starter for the 49ers in the last couple of seasons and while he isn't your prototypical quarterback he has been successful and the guys on the team look to him as a leader he's been good on the field and they can trust him.

Smith in the mean time hasn't played two years and while he certainly has the ability in terms of physical skills he hasn't proved anything on the field yet. So regardless of how he does in the pre season I don't know if Smith is going to make it as a starter at least not to begin the season.

Anything can happen as the season progresses Smith could end up getting elevated as starter because of an injury and it could be because that Hill can't cut it but right now Hill is proven over the last half season that he's worthy of a chance to be the starting quarterback and until proves otherwise on the field he's going to be given that chance.

Frankly if your Alex Smith having Hill as the starter playing as the back up it's probably the better the way to go for the very simple reason everybody loves the back up quarterback it's always been like that even when Joe Montana was the starting quarterback there were people clamoring for Steve Young to take the job obviously that's a very unique situation against two guys who were Hall of Famers.

That thinking is besides the point the very simple fact is that in the NFL nobody is more popular than the back up quarterback because if your starter starts doing poorly everybody starts singing the praises of the guy on the bench and that will be Alex Smith.

Smith has been injured and has not done very well on the field even before his injuries you got to go with the guy who has been doing well most recently and that's Sean Hill.

Where is Michael Crabtree? The 49ers number one pick and number ten overall in the draft is still unsigned for a little bit of time it wasn't that big a deal because there was a lot of number one picks in the NFL who were unsigned as a matter of fact about a week and half ago only two guys were signed as number one picks that has quickly changed in the last week.

The majority of number one picks has signed and Crabtree is still not in camp and is one of the guys who has not signed. Part of the problem is that Crabtree's agent is insisting that even though Crabtree was picked number ten he should be paid like he was picked number five.

The logic is confusing here because the way Eugene Parker, Crabtree's agent is arguing the fact that Crabtree should have been a number five, he was projected as a number five everybody thought he was going to go around number five therefore he should be paid number five.

However the simple fact of the matter is Crabtree didn't go number five he went number ten and while maybe you can argue they can pay him a little bit more maybe like a number nine pick or even a number eight pick, a number five pick has a significant amount of more money than his number 10 pick.

When your talking about these picks were talking about guaranteed money. Remember in the NFL nobody has a guaranteed contract just a big deal if your signing a contract as a number one pick is how much guaranteed money can you get.
