SANTA CLARA--The 49ers aren't even in mini camp yet and head coach Mike Singletary is just waiting for the guys to show up and land some of the positions and there is not too much to be decided on in training camp but so far what the team has done is expand the offense.

They presumably installed plays and took advantage of some of the things they learned last year and quarterback Alex Smith has been studying his playbook making sure he knows everything that's going on that he didn't know last year.

In fact he didn't start the season as quarterback that was Shaun Hill last year. So now Smith gets to come into his season as the bonefide starter and he knows that the job is more or less his outside of some kind of injury. He will be able to focus on the playbook and that's been what the 49ers have been waiting for.

Ever since Smith joined the 49ers Smith has had five different offensive coordinators in his first five seasons. That makes it really difficult to learn an offense because every single season that's for the new coordinator coming in. That means the signals are changing, the blocks are changing, the plays are changing.

The 49ers are now being geared towards offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and Smith has had a chance to get used to Raye's plays and calls. Now that he's used to them after year one. He can really get a chance of mastering them in year two.

This will suit everybody in the offense not just Smith but some of the younger guys like Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Frank Gore the offensive lineman. All these guys, they have some continuity their not learning the plays they're learning the intricacies of their play and that's a nice subtle difference that everybody doesn't appreciate when their watching pro football.

Once you have some continuity it makes it a lot easier to execute on the field and you kind of see that with the team the 49ers are playing in the pre season like the Indianapolis Colts they have the same kind of offensive system such as Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has for the last ten years.

Manning knows the playbook in Indianapolis backwards and forwards because he's been using it for ten years. Smith hasn't been in the league but for five years he hasn't even had the same offensive coordinator for one year. So if he gets this offense for two years in a row that everybody else on the team gets it'll be a big help. Then you'll see a more confident offense coming into the season. Maybe because they're more familiar with the plays and the calls and everything that they have to do on offense.

On the defensive side of the ball defensive coordinator Greg Manusky put together a fantastic defensive season last year and the Niners want to improve on that. You know Singletary is a smash mouth linebacker who was the captain of the Bears defense in the 80s.

He's bringing that same smash mouth mentality to the 49ers which you saw in a number of games last season where the defense played fantastic football and played pure hardnosed in your face football. This isn't a team that doesn't rely on tricks on the defensive side of the ball. They’re a team that relies on a good solid positioning excellent execution and good defensive playing.
