SANTA CLARA--San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary is monitoring the possibility of signing Atlanta Falcon quarterback Michael Vick. The 49ers are in need of a faceted quarterback and someone who can anchor the position.
The 49ers have had their turnstiles full of quarterbacks beginning with 2005 number one draft pick Alex Smith who wants to come back to the team with the agreement to take a huge salary reduction as opposed to his old $49 million contract which ended last year,Smith lost his starting job in the 2008 season due to an injury.
After losing after Smith who was on the shelf the 49ers former coach Mike Nolan selected J.T.O'Sullivan as starting quarterback but that did not work out after the 49ers offense couldn't prove to be effective and lost key games which eventually led to Nolan's firing mid season.
When Singletary took over the coaching duties for San Francisco he restructured the offense that worked in coordination with 49er quarterback Shaun Hill who later who helped lead San Francisco to some victories towards the end of last season. While Hill became the team's number one quarterback and threw 2,046 yards, with an 87.5 pass rating, team General Manager Scot McCloughan said that Michael Vick can be that anchor at the 49er quarterback position they have long been looking for, "I'm not going get into names, the important thing now is which ones fit that (system). It has to be a chemistry where he fits in with everybody. There's value out there, and it's a position we need to address, whether the draft or free agency." said McCloughan.
Vick is currently in Federal Prison for dogfighting and will be released in July. Although he is property of the Falcons the Falcons are looking to get out of his contract and to trade him or cut him once camp opens in July. "he's still under contract you can't really have any contact with him, right now, were just going to look at quarterbacks we have to go from there." said Singletary. Singletary said that Vick needs a second chance and someone in the league should give him that opportunity.
