Fans of the 49ers have wondered for weeks now as to who would replace veteran announcer Joe Starkey, after two decades, on radio broadcasts of the team’s games. Starkey, who will continue to be the voice of the University of California Golden Bears, was for years also considered the voice of the San Francisco NFL team as well. Small wonder, then, that the search would be a difficult one once Starkey announced his decision to leave the 49ers and devote himself to the Cal games.
To replicate Starkey, it would be necessary to find someone who is not only competent and experienced, but also a first-class gentleman and consummate professional. That is obviously a tall order, but it has been filled with the selection of the highly respected veteran sportscaster Ted Robinson.
Although Robinson’s personal ties over recent years have been local, and have included broadcasting Stanford football and Giants’ baseball games, his professional activities have been global, encompassing tennis tournaments around the world and a variety of Olympic venues, including the 2008 games in China.
In order to accept the job, Robinson will have to trim his other broadcasting gigs, which he says will be done gladly, given the prestige of covering the 49ers. This means, specifically, that he will no longer cover games on the Versus network as he has done lately. This will not be his first time in the booth at Candlestick Park, as he was on the 49ers’ broadcast staff in 1983.
The legion of fans who will miss Joe Starkey will be consoled by the fact that Robinson brings to the job the same qualities, and Starkey will continue with Cal football. For Bay Area listeners, it sounds like the best of both worlds.
