( SAN FRANCISCO)- Tuesday night the San Francisco 49ers announced that Trent Baalke was the new General Manager. Baalke had served as the Director of Player Personnel for the 49ers and handled the 2010 draft and personnel department after the departure of Scot McCloughan. From the start Baalke was considered the front runner for GM. The Niner organizaton put on a show to try and disguise the fact that no matter what they wouldn't go outside their shop to hire a GM, as the Scary one accurately predicted.
This hiring is not really a story. The supposed involvement of Eddie D, Bill Belichick and others as advisors to young Jed York was all a sham. I was never fooled. Now the focus is on who will be the new head coach for the 49ers. I hope whoever is being courted not named Jim Harbaugh ,doesn't get put off by this WWE like prearranged action ! To be sure the 49ers dotted their I's and crossed their T's , per the Rooney rule , interviewed one minority candidate and interviewed a reasonable amount of likely candidates before doing exactly what they had planned all along, hire Baalke.
Right or wrong the Niners under the " young genius " Jed York and family will continue to plow ahead irregardless of anyone elses advice. Trent will find out that as a GM he will now be in the limelight and more on the hotseat than a new coach hire ! Coaches come and they go but if you flop big at the top its harder to make a comeback. This is the most important hire for the 49ers. If it works out the team can become a top brand again . If it doesn't than all bets are off , including any thoughts of a new stadium. If Jim Harbaugh is hired and Baalke puts his foot in mouth about a player to the press like Scot McCloughan did on Alex Smith, than high draft picks will shy away from the Niners. There is a very small window of opportunity to right the ship. Who could imagine a year ago that the Oakland Raiders would come across as being more stable than the 49ers !
Unfortunately for all us regular folks the economy is so bad we will have difficulty justifying coughing up big cash for anything but the best product with the best value. All the PR promises mean nothing to someone that is worrying about being laid off ! There won't be much rope given to another experiment like Mike Singletary the " Boot Camp " director or a take or leave it GM ! San Francisco is a world icon and any business corporation worth its salt should know how to make the most of it. If the Yorks are really smarter than everyone in the media this is the time to prove it ! Good luck Trent Baalke and the new coach !
