( SAN FRANCISCO )- Now that the San Francisco 49ers have settled on Trent Baalke as their new coach it is thought that the hiring of Jim Harbaugh will follow shortly if not in hours ! The Niner organization has made it known that he is their first pick ! Harbaugh has always been involved in coaching even when he was an NFL player. He was a certified unpaid assistant coach at Western Kentucky for his father Jack. Coaching has been in his blood ! Coming off Stanfords big Orange bowl victory , Harbaugh's spotlight couldn't be brighter. If he is to lock up a plum job in the NFL there is no better time. He put Stanford University on the football map again. He has enough coaching experience but will it translate to the NFL ?
Another big question I have is just who will be his assistants if he is hired. Derek Mason who coaches for him at Stanford was with the Minnesota Vikings and Ron Turner was an offensive coordinator in 2009 for the Chicago Bears. Will he bring his Stanford team with him ? Hiring a head coach is really a package deal folks. One thing is for sure Harbaugh has to be better at working with the media than " Iron Mike " Singletary was ! He has wisely chosen not to discuss any speculation with the media. The Niners need to make a good hire soon or there could be an exodus of season ticket holders and questions in the minds of the sponsors. Afterall this is about business.
Look for an announcement soon. Jed York has to show that he is good at making decisions. The entire NFL will benefit from a better 49er team. All the high profile problems of players and coaches in 2010 made it seem that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was losing control ! America needs football to calm the troubled nation ! When I eat my Wheaties in the morning and contemplate being laid off, I need to know that the San Francisco 49ers are once again in good hands !
